Your hesitation is valid. In a world that can be quick to judge, choosing to speak openly about your inner life can feel exposing and unfamiliar.
Counselling does not require you to arrive fearless. It simply asks that you arrive willing. Often, meaningful change begins at the edge of comfort, when we decide to do something different from what has kept us stuck. Taking that first step at your pace can be the beginning of new clarity and direction.
During the first session, you can expect a brief intake that will explore relevant life history, goals, expectations, and agree on a counselling plan.
Counselling can support you with day to day challenges and improve your overall wellbeing. This may include navigating life transitions, working through relationship strain, and gaining clarity and structure so you can move towards your goals.
There is no guaranteed outcome, as progress takes a different form for each person. However, we will work collaboratively to define clear counselling goals and support you in working towards them. Progress depends on several factors, including regular attendance, openness in sessions, and your commitment to the process, including any activities or tasks agreed on between sessions.
Your confidentiality is taken extremely seriously. As a registered practitioner, I am bound by the HPCSA's ethical rules and legal requirements to protect your information. Any improper breach of confidentiality can carry serious professional consequences.
It is understandable to feel anxious about privacy, especially in a close-knit community. In counselling, your information is kept confidential and is only shared in very limited circumstances where disclosure is legally or ethically required, such as when there is a serious and immediate risk of harm or where mandatory reporting applies.
